Sign into Google Classroom

Example:

Welcome Students!

Today we are going to get you logged in to your Google Classroom.

Your username is:  

1) The number "17"
2) Your first name  
3) The first initial of your last name  
4)  @ps138school.com

NO SPACES AND NO CAPITAL LETTERS!

Example: 17johnl@ps138school.com

Your password is: students17


Sign in to Classroom at classroom.google.com.

On the homepage, click "Join class".


After you have joined your class, you will complete a short survey about yourself.

Procedure:  
1)      Open and read the survey posted by the teacher, which asks you to answer a series of questions about yourself. 
2)      Answer the questions.
3)      Check spelling and grammar using the rubric posted here.

Welcome Grade 5!






   Topic: Introduction to Technology

Hello Students:

Welcome to our Technology class. You are living during a time when we are experiencing the largest increase in expressive capability in human history. It will be a function of this class to help you become effective communicators in the media of your time.

We will be meeting here and online every week where we will use and study technology.  

Today you will be assigned a seat here in our classroom, we'll go over the rules and then jump right in to our first assignment.


The Rules Of Our Class:

1) Be respectful of yourself and others.
2) Raise your hand to speak during class.
3) Listen quietly while others are speaking.
4) Always do your best!


Procedure for entering the classroom:

a)      Form two lines in the hall outside the classroom
b)      Sit down in your assigned seat.
c)       DO NOT turn on the computers or put on the headphones until asked to do so.
d)      Listen quietly to hear what the days assignment is.

Procedure for leaving the classroom:
a)      Sign out of Google Classroom
b)      Shut down your computer from onscreen menu.
c)       DO NOT turn off the computer using the power button.
d)      DO NOT power off the monitor.
e)      Stand up, push in your chair and go out the back way to line up by the door when asked to do so.




Assessment

Each week you will be given an assignment to complete in class.  I will keep track of your work in a Google Doc that looks like this:




Technology Rubric

Got it! = The main idea of the assignment is clear and related to the purpose or theme of the project.


Working on it! = The main idea of the assignment is more or less clear and related to the purpose or theme of the project.

Needs Help = Completed week's assignment approaching standard. The completed assignment does not have a clear purpose or central theme. 

Absent = Assignment was not completed.


Final Grade Rubric

All grades of “Got it!” for the projects and weekly assignments, along with good behavior, during a grading period will result in a final grade of:

4

A mixture of “Got it!” and “Working on it!” for the projects and weekly assignments, along with good behavior, during a grading period will result in a final grade of:

3

A mixture of “Working on it!” and “Needs help” for the projects and weekly assignments and questionable classroom behavior during a grading period will result in a final grade of:

2

A collection of “Needs help” for the projects and weekly assignments along with unexcused absences from class and poor classroom behavior during a grading period will result in a final grade of:

1

Google Brochure

Hello Students:

Today you are going to make a Google Brochure about someone you admire using research and photos you find on the Internet. Here are the steps you’ll need to make your slide:

1)         Sign into Google Classroom.
2)         Open the Blank Brochure in your Google Classroom.
3)         Name your Brochure with the topic of your research.
4)         Take note of the format provided for your Brochure.
5)         Search for and import the photos you need. You can find them by searching on Google.
6)         Re-size your photos to fit in the template.
7)         In a new tab, do a search for the person you admire.
8)         In the text boxes, write the information that goes with your photos.
9)         When you are finished, share your Brochure with me by sending it to: stevena@ps138school.com



In the next class we will view the presentations and reflect on the steps you took to complete the project.

Scratch: Adventures on the High Seas

Hello Students:

Today you are going to learn how to make a project in Scratch by following directions in a series of videos.


1)       Open the Grade 5 page on the PS 138 Homepage.

2)         Click on Adventures on the High Seas.

3)         Click on and watch the High Seas introduction.

4)         When the first video is finished, click “next” and continue watching the videos and following the instructions.

5)         When it asks you to join Scratch: 
a. Use your first name and the first initial of you last name as your username.
b.  Use you class number as your password.
c. Use stevena@ps138school.com        as your email address.

7)       Continue watching the videos and programming for your project.

8)        Raise your hand when you’re finished or if you have a question.

Dr. Seuss Web Quest.

Introduction

Welcome to our Dr. Seuss Web Quest.
Today we will be traveling back in time to discover facts about this beloved writer. 

 

Task

Each time traveler will travel back in time with using the resources on the Internet. 
Time travelers will search for information about Dr. Seuss using these resources: 

Each time traveler will record their findings on the Dr. Suess Fact Sheet.

 

Process

Step 1

  • Each time traveler will find a copy of the Dr. Seuss Fact Sheet in Google Classroom.

 

Step 2

  • Time travelers should use the Dr. Seuss Resources.

Step 3
  • Time travelers should click on the appropriate resources to online links to get information about Dr. Seuss. 
  • Search the different web sites to find information about your Dr. Seuss and then write in all the information on your Dr. Seuss Fact Sheet.

Step 4
  • Students and teacher will go over the information collected about Dr. Seuss as a class.

Presidents Day Web Quest

Introduction

Welcome to our Presidents Day Web Quest.
Today we will be traveling back in time to discover facts about two of our country's most beloved presidents. 
You will find out many interesting facts about one president and also find out why George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are considered among our country's most beloved presidents.

 

Task

Each time traveler will pick one partner to travel back in time with using the resources on the Internet. (It's never safe to time travel alone!)
One of our time travelers will explore the 1700's and will search for information about George Washington using the George Washington Resources:

List of Nicknames of Presidents of the United States



The other time traveler will explore the 1800's and will search for information about Abraham Lincoln using the Abraham Lincoln Resources:


Each time traveler will record their findings on the Presidential Fact Sheet.
Both time travelers will meet back in 2018 to compare and contrast information about the two presidents.

Process

Step 1

  • Each time traveler will find a copy of the Presidential Fact Sheet in Google Classroom.

 

Step 2

  • Each time traveler will be given a president to explore.
  • Time travelers researching Lincoln should use the Abraham Lincoln Resources.
  • Time travelers researching Washington should use the George Washington Resources.

Step 3
  • Time travelers should click on the appropriate resources to online links to get information about their president. 
  • Search the different web sites to find information about your president and then write in all the information on your Presidential Fact Sheet.

Step 4

  • When Presidential Fact Sheets are completed, you and your neighbor will meet and discuss the two presidents and how they were alike as well as how they were different and together write a reflection in your journals.
